Green Line service resumes after reports of smoke, sparks in Park Street station

BOSTON — Service on the Green Line was suspended downtown after passengers posted photos of what appeared to be sparks and flames in Park Street Station.

Several Twitter users reported flames and smoke in the station and photos appeared to corroborate the reports.

"A flood of smoke came towards us, I told the girl in booth that was selling t-shirts that she should close up and get outta there," said Jennifer Lynch, a T rider.

The MBTA tweeted an alert about the suspensions between Park Street and Haymarket, urging customers to use the Orange Line between Haymarket and Downtown Crossing to get through downtown.

According to the MBTA, the smoke was emanating from an overhead trough that contains electrical wiring but there was no fire.

The MBTA's power department and the Boston Fire Department are investigating.

Around 2 p.m., the MBTA tweeted that Green Line service had resumed after the power department completed repairs to the overhead wires that had been damaged.

"A lot of people were definitely confused as to what was going on," said Ky'Ron Owens. "I walked in and on the far end of the tunnel you could see the smoke and it was quite concerning at that point which was what caused me to pull out my phone and start recording, then the smoke just kept progressing forward."
