PLYMOUTH, Mass. — A great white shark sighting closed two Plymouth beaches to swimmers Saturday afternoon.
A veteran lobsterman of 30 years spotted the shark about a half-mile from Manomet Point shortly before 2 p.m., the Plymouth Harbormaster told FOX25.
Swimmers were ordered out of the water at both Plymouth Long Beach and Whitehorse Beach.
Crews on boats are now searching the water for the shark. The beaches are expected to remain closed to swimming throughout Saturday afternoon; there is no estimated time for reopening.
Last summer, great whites were also spotted in the Plymouth area.
Great whites have become common off the coast of Massachusetts in recent summers, attracted by the seals, their favorite meal. Sightings often prompt beach closings.
