(MyFoxBoston.com) -- A local grandmother and her granddaughter were forced to live in a hotel for the last several months because of the damage snow caused to their home last winter. As of Wednesday, they are still waiting to move back in, and someone made a bad situation even worse for this family.
As they wait for the insurance money to be paid and work to be done, someone took advantage of a local grandmother and her granddaughter.
Amy Lamachia and her 7-year-old granddaughter have been living in a 2-room Extended Stay in Norwood for five months. Their home is in neighboring Walpole. The home has been gutted and almost everything needs to be replaced, all from ice dams an inch thick.
"It was bad, it was coming in her room, it was coming in here, it was coming in through all the windows. My office upstairs I had to tarp my computer, turn everything off," Lamachia said.
Lamachia had planned to be back in by July, but there's been one set back after another the latest one nearly pushed her over the edge.
Lamachia recently discovered that someone had broken into her vacant home and stole most of her copper piping. What may have been worth a couple hundred of bucks at a scrap yard will add another $5,000 to her repair bill and with the required inspections it's likely they will delay her homecoming another month.
Some of the repairs are covered by insurance, but not all of them. If you would like to make a donation, click here.
