CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — When a woman was hit by a car in Cambridge Sunday, one man jumped from his car and rushed to her side.
She was jogging along the Charles River when she was hit while crossing Memorial Drive.
Nito Melendez was in the back of an Uber heading to visit his mom for Mother’s Day when he saw the accident unfold.
“The person behind that person making a turn was like, 'I’m going to gun it as soon as possible,'” Melendez said, describing the moment before the impact.
He told Boston 25 News he wished he could’ve done something to help before it happened, but he never had a chance.
“Then she got hit and I’ve never seen or experienced anything like that,” Melendez said.
The BMW that slammed into the woman was just behind a car that was making a right hand turn, he said.
A portion of the car’s windshield was shattered during the accident.
“As soon as he had a millimeter to get through, he gunned it,” Melendez said. “And it was in slow motion as I watched this person hit this person and she went high up in the air.”
Melendez jumped out of the car right after seeing her hit the pavement and rushed to the injured jogger’s side.
“I really thought someone was going to die in my hands. I can’t believe it,” he said. “I was saying her name over and over. I made sure her mouth was open, when the blood started to come up, I was trying to pour it out and she was coughing.”
Melendez tended to her until paramedics arrived.

Investigators went on to shut down the busy road for hours -- questioning the driver who hit the woman and processing the BMW for evidence before towing it away.
“She could’ve passed right there and I wouldn’t have known how to react to that,” Melendez said. “I’m hoping whatever I did helped her and that she’s okay.”
