'Whitey' Bulger's girlfriend sentenced to additional 21 months

BOSTON — A Hollywood story with real life consequences for James ‘Whitey’ Bulger's long-time girlfriend Catherine Greig.

Since cameras are not allowed in federal court a sketch is the only image available of Greig in a blue prison jumpsuit.  Her attorney Kevin Reddington was by her side.

“She still has strong feelings for him yes,” Reddington said.

Greig's devotion to the notorious gangster she fell in love with more than forty years ago cost her another 21 months in prison.

During the sentencing U.S. District Court Judge Dennis Saylor blasted Greig for refusing to say who might have helped her and Bulger during the sixteen years they spent as fugitives

"Ms. Greig is not remorseful, contrite, and has not expressed regret or sorrow,” Saylor said. "She is an adult, she knows the rules. She's been advised. She brought this on herself, no one else to blame."

Steven Davis’ sister is one of Bulger’s alleged murder victims. He says Greig's continued loyalty to Bulger is a slap in the face.

“I don't think she got enough time and I don't want to see her get a life sentence but if they gave her enough time she would have talked,” Davis said.

While that’s one possibility, Greig’s attorney says it may not be the case.

“She's an intelligent woman.  She walked into the relationship with her eyes open and she has no regrets.  She is willing to accept her punishment,” Reddington said.

In fact, Reddington said, Greig continues to believe whitey is innocent.

“When she first discovered about these allegations and charges she never believed them still doesn't believe them still thinks he's the guy she fell in love with,” he said.

Catherine Greig is already serving an 8-year sentence for helping Bulger during his 16 years on the run. They were captured in Santa Monica, California, in 2011.

She pleaded guilty to a criminal contempt charge for refusing to testify before a grand jury. Her lawyer argued that no more than six months should be added to her sentence.

The 86-year-old Bulger was convicted in 2013 for playing a role in 11 murders. He's serving a life sentence.
