BOSTON — Friends and family will gather in South Boston Friday morning to say final goodbyes to two well-regarded doctors who were brutally murdered in their Dorchester Avenue penthouse last week.
The funeral for Dr. Lina Bolanos and Dr. Richard Field will be held at Gate of Heaven Catholic Church at 10 a.m.
The man accused of killing the couple, 30-year-old Bampumim Teixeira, has been charged with two counts of murder.
His attorney Monday entered not guilty pleas on his behalf during a bedside arraignment at a hospital where he’s recovering after he was shot by officers during a standoff.
According to prosecutors, on May 5 a friend of the couple called police and said he got a text message from Field, which was described as “a plea for help.”
The text message said there was a gunman in the apartment, which prosecutors say was detailed in a recorded 911 call from the friend.
Officers who showed up at the condo found a set of keys on the floor in front of the door. Police said they knocked and announced their presence.
When no one answered, officers said they used the keys found on the floor to enter the apartment, which was dark inside.
At some point Teixeira was shot in the leg, abdomen and hand. He was treated at the scene and then taken to Tufts Medical Center.
Bolanos and Field were found with their throats slashed and hands bound.
In a statement, Field’s family called the deaths of the doctors “a tragedy beyond measure” but said they wanted “to remember Richard and Lina for who they were, not how they died.”
Bolanos worked at Mass Eye and Ear as a pediatric anesthesiologist a
Teixeira once worked at the couples’ South Boston condominium for about three weeks.
