Department Members and Staff,
Today, it is with great pride and a deep sense of accomplishment that I am announcing my retirement from the Massachusetts State Police. While my official retirement will not be officially effective until later this month, Governor Baker will be announcing the appointment of a new Superintendent later this morning. The newly appointed Superintendent will assume leadership of the department effective this Sunday, July 12th.
For over thirty-two years I have been associated with some of the finest, bravest and genuinely committed men and women that anyone would want to share such a journey with. Through my association with the Massachusetts State Police, I’ve made life-long friendships and developed a network of friends and colleagues that spans this country. As your Colonel, I put forth my very best effort – in every situation and circumstance - to represent you in a way that reflects honorably upon the Massachusetts State Police. In every case I have made the difficult and easy decisions that we required – always guided by what I thought to be in the best interests of this department and the public safety concerns of the citizens of the Commonwealth. I leave no regrets or reservations, only with the satisfaction of having served a long and productive career.
I want to thank former Governor Deval Patrick for having appointed me to this position in 2012 as well as Governor Charlie Baker for having the confidence in my leadership through the first six months of his administration. Most of all, I want to thank the loyal members of my command staff and the entire membership of this department, both sworn and civilian - those who are “difference makers” in the lives of people across this state every day. I wish the Massachusetts State Police and the new Superintendent much success with the many challenges that lie ahead.
Respectfully,
Timothy P. Alben
