SOMERVILLE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) - He used to get paid to uphold the law, but a former Somerville police officer is now accused of breaking it.

Police say former officer Samuel Stanford, 28, broke into the Somerville Police Department and stole a gun.

Court documents say police found out about the break-in when a lieutenant checked his locker and noticed that his service firearm was missing.

Surveillance tapes are said to show 28-year-old Stanford punching in a key code to enter the building, then used a cloth to jam the door so he could leave again.

During a raid on the apartment where Stanford lives with his family, police discovered ammunition, nearly 200 pills and $20,000 in cash.

Samuel Stanford and his brother Edward are both charged with drug possession, intent to sell drugs, and possession of ammunition without a license.

Samuel Stanford's attorney says her client as a problem with opioid addiction and has received treatment.
