FRANKLIN, Mass. — The Franklin Public Schools Department is investigating after a report of a group of Franklin High School spectators yelling “homophobic, racist, and anti-Semitic” slurs at Sharon High School outfielders during the varsity baseball game Thursday night.

Franklin High School was home, playing against Sharon High School.

In a letter sent out to parents Friday afternoon, Franklin High School Principal Joshua Hanna said, “We denounce such behavior and are outraged. Our hearts go out to the Sharon community. There is no place for such behavior in our schools and at school events.”

The initial report states that student-fans were standing along the outfield fence in left field when the heckling started. According to a report from Sharon schools, the coaches and players on Franklin High were not part of the incident.

“This behavior is highly inconsistent with our core values and the inclusive culture we are committed to creating at Franklin High School,” said Hanna. “We immediately began an investigation and we are actively seeking to identify the persons responsible. We have also contacted the Franklin Police Department.”

The incident was reported to the Anti-Defamation League. Both the Franklin Public Schools Superintendent and the Sharon Public Schools Superintendent have been in contact with each other and are providing full cooperation and assistance to the police.

In a statement, the Franklin Public Schools Superintendent Sara Ahern said, “I write this evening with deep concern and outrage over a report from Sharon High School involving fans at our varsity baseball game last evening. Our core values include providing an inclusive environment and we seek to have each member of our community and guests and visitors feel safe and supported. Our thoughts are with the Sharon community, and especially with the players involved.”

Boston 25 has reached out to Sharon Public Schools for comment.

“Individuals identified as being responsible will face disciplinary consequences and education in accordance with the Franklin High School Handbook,” Hanna continued. “We will also take appropriate steps to remedy the negative impact of these acts on the school community and restore a sense of safety and support for all.”

Franklin High School is offering students and faculty the opportunity to meet with counselors about the incident if they so choose. They will also be increasing staff supervision at school sponsored events to assure a more safe and supportive environment.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Franklin Police Department or Franklin Public Schools.
