Doctor testifying in defense of Michelle Carter

TAUNTON, Mass. — The defense is putting a doctor on the stand Monday as they work to clear the name of a Plainville woman accused of encouraging her boyfriend to kill himself.

Prosecutors say that in 2014, 17-year-old Conrad Roy and Michelle Carter were in a relationship and that she eventually sent him text messages supporting his plan to commit suicide.

Carter, now 20, could be in prison up to 20 years in convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

The doctor is expected to testify about an addiction Carter has.

The case could wrap up as early as next week; Carter waived her right to a jury trial, so her fate sits in the hands of a judge.
