David Price retweet of tweet about upcoming White House visit goes viral

A perk of winning a championship is a trip to the White House to meet the president. But lately, for their own reasons, players are deciding not to go, and that's the case with the World Series Champion Red Sox, who are set to go to Washington on Thursday.

Skipper Alex Cora says he won't be there and there's growing reaction to a tweet about it.

While the team has traveled to the White House for the other three recent titles, it's not so this time.

Cora is out, team owner John Henry is in, along with other front office leaders including Dave Dombrowski and Sam Kennedy.

When it comes to players, Sox pitcher David Price is the latest to weigh in.

Price reacted to a tweet by athletic columnist Steve Buckley, who wrote Sunday: "Alex Cora has confirmed newspaper report he will not make the trip to meet the president. So basically it’s the white Sox who’ll be going."

Cora has been outspoken about his feelings on the government's disaster relief response in Puerto Rico.

Price retweeted Buckley's tweet on Monday, with this message:

Buckley said on WEEI Monday, prior to his tweet, he saw reports from Puerto Rico that Cora wouldn't be going, but didn't want to retweet based on that information.

"I waited until the Red Sox game ended and Cora was asked about it in the post-game…so I said Alex Cora confirms he will not be going to visit the president, uh, so basically it’s the White Sox will be making the trip and it was a play on words," Buckley said.

Edwin Alicea, president of the Puerto Rican Festival of Massachusetts, issued a statement regarding the situation:

If it's about the White House - I feel Alex Cora made another World Series type of decision. If the President was a reasonable thinking person then Alex would have probably taken the chance to visit the white house in hopes of making a difference for the island like he did for our beloved Red Sox. The economy is doing great and their is doubt with our government being corrupted but we still believe in our government doing the right thing for our mainland Americans then why not do the right thing for our Puerto Rican  Americans on the island by releasing the emergency funds allocated for the island. Alex Cora again made the right call to represent our Puerto Rican America on the island from here in Boston where he is totally respected more.  - Edwin Alicea

There was no direct comment from the team on Price's tweet.

They are in Baltimore tonight, preparing to play the Orioles.

Price is not playing anytime soon as he battles tendinitis.
