DARTMOUTH, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Detectives and prosecutors are investigating a fatal police-involved shooting that happened late Thursday night at an apartment complex, the the Bristol County District Attorney's office confirmed.
Just after 11 p.m. Thursday night, the DA's office said police responded to the Ledgewood Commons apartment complex at 3 Ledgewood Blvd.
Officers there spoke with a woman who said her ex-boyfriend, later identified as 25-year-old Luis Roman of New Bedford, came into her apartment, and damaged her television and computer.
While police were taking statements from the woman and her parents about the incident, Roman reportedly called the woman's father and asked if police were still there. When he learned officers were on scene, Roman said he was coming back to the apartment with his gun and ammunition, and that he was not returning to jail, according to the DA's office.
Roman came back to the apartment complex, and police officers on scene told him to leave his vehicle with his hands up. Roman went to get out, but then got back in, and when officers approached him in his vehicle, the DA's office said he grabbed one of two guns he was carrying.
At some point, according to the DA's office, Roman fired two shots. Police fatally shot and killed Roman.
Though officers took Roman out of his vehicle and began performing CPR, he was pronounced dead a short time later at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford.
The investigation into the incident is in its preliminary stages, according to a press release from the Bristol County DA's office.
