BOSTON — The iconic Clock Tower at the Custom House hit triple digits Wednesday.
It's been 100 years since the four-sided clock officially started counting time; construction began in 1913 and finished in 1915, but the clock didn't start ticking until April 6, 1916.
The clock sits on the 496-foot Custom House tower, which can be seen 15 to 25 miles away. The clock itself is 22 feet in diameter, with a 13-foot-8-inch long minute hand and a 10-foot-8-inch hour hand. At the time it was built, it was the largest clock in the U.S. and the Custom House tower was Boston's first skyscraper.
The clock has been renovated several times over the years, mostly recently in 1987 and 2012, and David Hochstrasser is the local clock expert in charge of maintaining it.
