MEDFORD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) --Police have arrested a Romanian national they say was using a cloned credit or debit card made with an ATM skimming machine to withdraw cash from a local woman's account.
Wednesday afternoon, that woman's husband alerted police when he noticed unusual activity on her bank statement. When police arrived at the Bank of America ATM on High Street in Medford, they say 34-year-old Bogdan Mocanu was leaving the vestibule carrying a large amount of cash and had a total of 7 cloned cards in his possession.
After his arrest, Mocanu allegedly made statements to investigators they believe could connect him to a ring of Romanian nationals that federal officials, including ICE and the Secret Service, have been monitoring.
They say the ring is believed to be responsible for a total of $1 million in theft from Bank America alone.
Medford investigators tell FOX25 they believe Mocanu is responsible for over $100,000 in theft at Bank of America and have connected him to 4 other fraud cases in Billerica, Woburn, Cambridge and Burlington.
FOX25 has also learned ICE began removal proceedings for Mocanu two years ago out of New York.
Mocanu has been charged with identity fraud, larceny, and improper use and forgery of a credit card.
He was ordered held on $250,000 bail, and ordered to wear a GPS device and surrender his passport if he is able to post that bail.
