2nd man arrested for assaulting correction officer near 'Methadone Mile'

BOSTON — Boston Police have arrested a 51-year-old man in connection with a brutal assault on a local correction officer while on his way to work.

Sean Stuart was charged with aggravated assault and battery, police said.

The Suffolk County Sheriff's Department told Boston 25 News an officer was arriving to work at the Suffolk County House of Correction Thursday morning when he was attacked.

The officer, who was not yet in his uniform, told police that a man yelled out to him while he was driving down Atkinson Street in the area known as Methadone Mile. He rolled down his driver's side window and was smacked in the face.

Once outside of the car, he was surrounded by multiple people who began to attack him. He said at one point he was hit with a metal object and witnesses also said the victim was hit in the face with a metal pipe.

At least five people assaulted him and stole his watch, glasses, and phone. The victim told police they also tried to take his wallet.

"If a trained deputy sheriff cannot work, walk to work safely, I'm particularly concerned with the residents and civilians of this area," said Jonathan Corey, the President of Local 419.

One person, identified as 45-year-old Torie Jenkins, was arrested and charged with breaking and entering a motor vehicle and attempted larceny of a motor vehicle. He will be arraigned on Friday morning.

Police say Jenkins was also found to have four active warrants for distribution of a Class A drug, distribution and possession of Class B drugs, assault and battery on a public employee, disturbing a correctional institution, and disorderly conduct.

The officer suffered serious injuries but was alert and is expected to be OK.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh told Boston 25 News:

The safety and well-being of the people in this city is my highest priority. I am confident that Boston Police will conduct a comprehensive investigation to get to the bottom of this incident. I wish the person involved a quick recovery.

Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins also released a statement following the assault:

The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office is keeping the corrections officer who was violently assaulted today in our thoughts. We are thankful to learn from the President of Local 419's statement that the officer has been released from the hospital and is recovering from his injuries.  I have spoken personally with Sheriff Tompkins and Commissioner Gross to express my commitment to holding the individuals who engaged in the attack accountable for their actions.  At this time, the investigation remains highly active and one individual is already in custody.  Additional information will be made available at arraignment, which is anticipated to take place tomorrow in the Roxbury Division of the Boston Municipal Court.
