(FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – A man convicted of killing a Providence police sergeant will still have to serve his original sentence.
The Rhode Island Supreme Court decided not to lower Esteban Carpio's two life sentences without parole.
In 2005, Carpio shot Sgt. James Allen with his own service weapon during an interrogation at police headquarters. At the time of the attack, Carpio was being questioned about the brutal stabbing of an elderly woman.
Carpio appeared in court days later needing a mask to hold back the swelling in his face after that police confrontation.
Carpio's lawyers unsuccessfully appealed the sentence, claiming he suffers from mental illness.
