Community mourns after Westport teen dies in car crash

WESTPORT, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A small community is in shock after the death of a well-known teen who died in a single-car crash on Saturday night.

Erika Hall, 16, was a sophomore at Westport High School, played field hockey on the varsity team, taught a dance class for children and worked at local ice cream parlor Handy Hill Creamery.

"We will all miss you dearly Erika, You were an amazing , sweet young lady. Always Smiling!" Handy Hill posted in a message on its Facebook page.

According to her obituary, Hall "lived to experience every ounce of joy and wonder that this world had to offer."

"It was really like sad, it's sad because the nicest people have the worst of outcomes. I was really upset when it happened," Hall's classmate said Tuesday.

Her father Nathan Hall said that a number of community members, from school, to church, to her dance class, have reached out to let her family know how much Erika meant to them.

"So many people have dropped by. The community in Westport has been just unbelievable," he told the Fall River Herald News.

The school has made counselors available for students who needed support.

The crash happened on Drift Road Saturday night. The driver of the car was a 16-year-old male, and there were two other passengers in the car as well. One of the other passengers, an 18-year-old man, was ejected from the car along with Erika. He was taken to a Rhode Island hospital where his condition is improving.

Hall and the other passenger were not wearing seatbelts.

An investigation into the crash remains ongoing, according to a spokesman for the Bristol County District Attorney's office.
