Colorado man sentenced to prison after 8th DUI conviction

GREELEY, Colo. — A Colorado man convicted of his eighth DUI was sentenced to spend a decade behind bars on Thursday.

The most recent DUI for Albaro Bustillos, 53, happened last March, when he was found parked on the side of a road, with his head down, reports KUSA-TV.

Bustillos told the officer he had two beers before getting behind the wheel, but the sobriety tests showed his BAC was at .227, according to court documents.

Out of his eight DUI convictions, this is his fourth with a blood alcohol level of 0.2 or higher, reports KUSA-TV. The legal limit for driving is .08; for most people, at .2 BAC, symptoms include feeling dazed, having trouble walking and having a blackout.

Bustillos first DUI charge dates back to 1994.

"It's clear the defendant can't stop drinking and driving," said Weld County, Colorado District Attorney Michael Rourke. "He's been to treatment, probation, even extended periods in jail. Nothing has worked. Prison is the only option at this point to keep the public safe."

According to the Centers for Disease Control, an average drunk driver has driven drunk more than 80 times before their first arrest.
