WINCHESTER, Mass. — A young boy has been taken to an area hospital after being found submerged in the water in Winchester.

Winchester Fire officials tell Boston 25 News that fire and police were called to Sandy Beach on the Upper Mystic Lake in Winchester around 3 p.m. Saturday for a water rescue.

A 4-year-old boy was found submerged in the water.

"All I saw was someone dragged the little boy out of the water and they were pumping his chest – more than one person – there was two people on him," a witness told Boston 25 News.

Off-duty Revere Police officer Joseph Singer was at the beach at the time. Cardiologist Dr. Alex Rothman and his family had just arrived at the beach when they heard screams for help.

"The police officer brought the child out of the water and my wife called me over and the child wasn't breathing and did not have a pulse," said Rothman.

Rothman and his wife began performing CPR.

"We treat adults on a pretty regular basis, but we don't normally treat children, it was unusual to not have all the equipment that you need," he said.

When first responders took over, Rothman said the boy had a pulse. He was taken to the hospital, but his condition is currently unknown.

Officer Singer, the school resource officer in Revere, has been in this position before. In May 2009, he jumped into the water off Revere Beach to help save three children who were trapped in the breakers. He swam out twice in the frigid water to get all of the children to safety.
