BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Police are investigating after a 9-year-old boy was found unresponsive at home after displaying flu-like symptoms for several days.
Evan Fisher was found unconscious around 5:30 a.m. Saturday at his High Street home. His family immediately called 911 because he was not breathing. Evan had recently been sick with what his family believes was the flu. He was rushed to Brockton Hospital after firefighters attempted to revive him with CPR.
Evan's family tells investigators the young boy got sick a few days ago and a doctor had been treating him for the flu-like symptoms.
A medical examiner is waiting to do an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there have been 141 pediatric deaths in the country this past year. Typically, flu related deaths among children range between 34 to 171 per year.
FOX25 talked to the boy's family off camera, and they say they are going through a lot right now. Neighbors say the boy's grandfather died of unexpected causes just last year.
Neighbor Jude Simon said, "I don't have any words right now to explain the pain I feel. They are my neighbors. I see them almost every day," she said.
Simon also said Evan was well known in the community, "always happy" and a "very nice kid."
The investigation remains ongoing, but police do not believe there was foul play involved in his death.
