BOSTON — An historic bridge in the North End is back open, following some emergency repairs.
The Charlestown Bridge was temporarily shut down yesterday after a large hole appeared in one of the lanes.
Engineers and public works crews rushed out to make repairs after the hole damaged several cars.
The bridge carries North Washington street between Charlestown and the North End.
“As I was driving over the bridge I felt a pop and my tire just went flat,” Kristin Wheeler told Boston 25 News. “It could have been a lot worse. The size of the hole is crazy.”
MassDOT says the bridge is structurally deficient. Just last month, the agency received federal funding to replace it.
