LEICESTER, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) â A car stolen back in 1998 was recovered in a reservoir in Leicester earlier this week.
A driver on Mannville Street saw the wheels of a car popping up in the water of Reservoir #2 Wednesday. Officials were able to see the car after the water level dropped, but most of it was still submerged. A diver checked the car to make sure there weren't any passengers and grabbed the license plate from the back.
After investigating, police found that the car was stolen in late 1998 from a nearby community. Because the car was in the water for about 16 years, officials needed specialized equipment to get the car out of the water. It was removed Thursday at about 1 p.m., closing the road for an hour.
Police say that the car was set on fire just before it went into the reservoir.
