BARNSTABLE, Mass. — A night custodian at Barnstable Intermediate School found a .22 caliber bullet in a classroom, according to a letter Principal James Anderson sent to families on Monday afternoon.

Anderson said school staff and Barnstable police officers conducted a visual sweep after the bullet was found.

During lunch, when students were in the cafeteria, a ballistic-locating K-9 team swept classrooms and lockers.

Students were not subject to a direct search.

No other contraband was found.

“Student safety is always our number one priority, which is why we responded in such a comprehensive manner,” Anderson said. “We are confident that there was no direct risk to students and will continue to work cooperatively with the Barnstable Police Department to further the investigation.”

Anderson said the incident provides an opportunity for parents to talk to their child about gun safety.
