Revere robbery suspect shot, killed by police in Lynn

LYNN, Mass. — Police are investigating a shooting that took place in Lynn on Monday morning and resulted in the death of a suspect who allegedly robbed a Walgreens.

Around 8:07 a.m., Revere Police received reports of a robbery at the Walgreens located at 430 Broadway Street in Revere.

Witnesses say a white man, later identified as 39-year-old John S. Mellone, fled the scene in a silver BMW and they provided the plate number to police.

According to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office, the Mellone was pursued by a police unit from Revere on Route 107. The unit attempted to stop him, and a pursuit began when he failed to stop.

At approximately 8:15 a.m., police in Revere notified Lynn Police that the pursuit was heading that way.

Numerous outlets are asking about an officer-involved shooting that occurred a short time ago in Lynn. The incident involved a confrontation between a suspect and local police officers. Various Massachusetts State Police assets are on scene to conduct the investigation, including detectives attached to the Essex District Attorney’s Office and crime scene personnel.

A Lynn officer working on the corner of Summer and Witt Streets saw the vehicle turn on the dead-end street being followed by Revere police and ran to help.

According to the Essex County DA, the Lynn police officer saw the Revere police officer pinned by Mellone’s car before approaching and shooting him.

The DA would not say if the suspect was armed.

Mellone died on scene and the Revere police officer was transported to Mass General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities say the Revere police officer is going to be okay. The Lynn officer who fired his gun was also checked out but was not injured.
