ABINGTON, Mass. — Police are investigating after a boy was shot Wednesday afternoon in an Abington home.
An 11-year-old boy was shot in the facial area around 3:30 p.m. on Linwood Street, police say. The boy was taken to South Shore Hospital, and flown to a Boston hospital. He's stable, but with life threatening injuries.
Police told FOX25 there were two 11-year-old boys playing with a handgun when it went off. It's unclear who was holding the firearm at the time it was fired.

Neighbors told FOX25 they were shaken by what they witnessed when the boy was taken to an ambulance.
“They put him in the back of the ambulance and he was crying real hard and he was covered in blood,” Beverly Mcaulife said.
Police said said it was a legal handgun used in the shooting. The District Attorney's office wouldn't say whose home it was or who the gun was registered to.

School officials sent a notice to parents about the incident with the following letter:
Tonight's news of a Woodsdale student suffering a gunshot wound in their neighborhood after school is heartbreaking and sad. Our sincerest thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.The Abington Public Schools will be providing counseling services to students in need. We are also available to families wanting more information about how to talk to their children regarding this tragic event.
Editor's Note: FOX25 originally reported that the boy shot himself, but police now confirm that is still under investigation. Police are also not confirming who found the young boy with the gunshot wound.
