IPSWICH, Mass. — Ipswich Police have recovered the body of a boater in the rough surf off Crane Beach, according to Police Chief Paul Nikas.
A fisherman spotted the man’s body in the water around 7:30 a.m. Monday.
The man has been identified as Sean Maney, 46, of Rowley. Maney was last heard from Sunday night when he was alone in his boat.
A United States Coast Guard helicopter located Maney’s boat on Monday stuck in the mud on nearby marshland.
The investigation of Maney's death is being conducted by the Ipswich Police Department, the Essex County District Attorney's Office and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. A preliminary investigation indicates an accidental drowning.
High winds Sunday and Monday have created unusually rough and choppy waters in the Plum Island Sound area, including the mouth of the Ipswich River and the water off of Steep Hill Beach and Crane Beach.
Chief Nikas is urging boaters to use extreme caution in these conditions.
