Decapitated body found on bank of Merrimack River in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Mass. — Police in Lawrence are investigating in the area of the Merrimack River where a body was found on the bank.

Investigators say the body was found in the area of McCabe Court by a woman who was walking her dog just before 2:45 p.m.

Family and friends of a teen who has been missing in the area for several weeks are gathered at the scene, hoping the body is not their loved one.

“I just want to make sure that it's not him because we want to have closure with this. He's been gone and no word of him and I'm really worried and concerned,” Carmen Checo, a family friend, said.

The District Attorney confirmed for FOX25 Thursday night that the male body was found decapitated.

“I feel bad because this is somebody's son,” Checo said. “I have a 14-year-old, and I wouldn't want to be in this situation.”

The District Attorney's office is working with the Medical Examiner's office determine the cause of death and identify the body.

Police said they believe this is an isolated incident and there is no danger to the community.
