Investigators vetting tips as search for Baby Doe's identity continues

WINTHROP, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Only FOX25 spoke directly with the investigators working to identify the young girl who was found on the shore of Deer Island.

Nearly 50-million people have seen a digital composite of the girl through social media and police have received hundreds of tips. Police are still searching for any clue that could help solve this case, and want to stress to the public that tips can be made anonymously.

FOX25 wanted to speak with these detectives to get a sense of the work going into identifying this girl and determining what happened to her. They say they are working around the clock vetting tips from across the country and even some from other countries.

Tips are pouring in for Mass. State Police as they work around the clock to give the child the dignity of an identity.

Trooper Dan Herman revealed one of the spreadsheets investigators are working off of.

"We've had hundreds and hundreds of calls," he said.

As tips come in that work begins. For example, one tip received Tuesday came from someone who believes a missing Colorado girl could be the child from Deer Island. Police will investigate, but believe this particular child has been missing too long.

They showed FOX25 how the composite photo of the girl has evolved since the quest to identify Baby Doe and determine how she died began in late June.

A passerby spotted her remains in a trash bag. She was wearing pajama pants and had a blanket alongside her.

On Tuesday, FOX25 met exclusively with the Mass. State Police detectives working the case. They told us they are chasing down every lead, but they believe the right tip will come from someone who knows this child.

That's something District Attorney Dan Conley later echoed at a news conference.

"If you are the parent or caregiver of this young child, please step forward, clear your conscious and help us identify this young child," he said.

And, investigators stressed that people can make tips anonymously.

Social media has led to most of the information. But investigators are circulating fliers with her photo to area hospitals, doctors offices and clinics. They are also working with DCF, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to name the child that someone discarded.

Police say they received a call from France from a concerned father. That child was located safely. They are also chasing down a lead in Mexico and say they are working to spread the information about this child to the Spanish speaking community.

Late on Tuesday, police announced that they have received several messages asking if the girl could be Maggie Sophia Ortega-Brown, but have learned that Ortega-Brown is "alive and well in another country."
