Toddler dead after being hit by ambulance near Tufts Medical Center

BOSTON — A toddler died after being struck by an ambulance on Nassau Street Saturday afternoon.

The crash happened near the intersection of Harrison Street, which is along the Tufts Medical Center complex in Boston.

Neighbor Raymond Pereyra rushed from his apartment after hearing wailing in the street.

"I came down through the lobby and saw mom on the floor in the pavement just crying in agony. She was just crying rolling in agony on the pavement, and there was blood near her," he said.

The toddler,

, was hit just steps from her home and was rushed to the Tufts Medical Center Emergency Room. There, the child was pronounced dead.

The ambulance is from a private company, EasCare, based in New England. Its website says its one of the largest medical services company in the region.

"Everyone at EasCare is deeply saddened by the incident that occurred earlier today. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim.  EasCare will continue co-operate fully with the investigation in an open and transparent manner," said Tim Coolen, president and CEO, in a statement.

Boston Police are investigating the incident. They said it appears to be a tragic accident.

The driver jumped out and tried to help; witnesses told FOX25's Christine McCarthy that he was heartbroken.

The ambulance was towed away after a couple of hours; the family's minivan remained parked nearby.
