WORCESTER, Mass. — A 235-year-old Worcester hardware store is shuttering for good this month.

Elwood Adams Hardware opened in 1782 and is considered to be the oldest hardware store in the nation.

Since 1958, it has been owned by the Cloutier family.

“Paul is ready to retire,” long-time manager Fred Neale said in a statement. Neale has been working at the store for 41 years.

A company has been brought in to run a store closeout sale through the third week of October.
