HAVERHILL, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) â Two high school students were suspended for posting racist tweets after a hockey game between the Bruins and Canadiens.
The Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School students posted the comments on Twitter after the May 1 game between the two teams, according to the Eagle Tribune. The Bruins lost 4-3 in double overtime after Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban scored. Subban was the subject of the tweets.
The students were suspended for one week and must attend a meeting Monday before going back to school, the Tribune reported.
Thousands of other racist tweets were posted on social media after Subban scored his second goal of the game to beat the Bruins in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, prompting Bruins President Cam Neely to release the following statement, "The racist, classless views expressed by an ignorant group of individuals following Thursday's game via digital media are in no way a reflection of anyone associated with the Bruins organization."
Several Twitter users claimed the "N-word" was trending in Boston after the game.
