17-year-old killed in Rhode Island crash, 2 others injured

JOHNSTON, R.I. — A Rhode Island teen was killed in a crash that injured two passengers in her car Monday afternoon.

According to police, the car went off the road and hit a tree on Interstate 295 in Johnston.

Lungpalinya Phouvong, 17, was not wearing a seatbelt when the car crashed, police said. She was taken to

Hasbro Children’s Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

The two other teens in the car were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
