13-year-old accused of having explosive device, making threat

WILMINGTON, Mass. — A 13-year-old is accused of threatening another student and a possessing explosive device.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said that the teenage boy, a student at Wilmington Middle School, sent threats to another student over social media on Wednesday.

School officials told the Wilmington Police, after the student reported the threats. Officers said they found a homemade explosive device as well as gun powder at the 13-year-old's home.

Wilmington police secured the home and the middle school was also searched, but no devices were found.

“The safety of our students is the highest priority in Wilmington schools. We have made the highest priority of actions to make sure children are safe when they come to school here, and I think parents can trust we have done everything possible,” School Committee Chairman Stephen Bjork said.

The child was charged with three counts of possession of an explosive device, possession of a counterfeit note and threatening to commit a crime.

He will be arraigned in Lowell Juvenile Court.
