CHELSEA, Mass. — Police say a car crash could have ended much worse after a driver crashed into a natural gas line in Chelsea.
It’s unclear what caused the crash, but the vehicle went straight through the protective barrier around the gas line and broke clean through the 3-inch main.
Fire officials said the driver backing his car off the line prevented gas from flowing and causing a huge explosion.
More than 100 people were evacuated from the apartment building as workers shut off the gas line.
National Grid is now working to restore gas service to the 24 units in the building.
