GARDNER, Mass. — Six units of a Gardner apartment building were left uninhabitable after a fire early Thanksgiving morning, according to the fire department.

Firefighters were called around 5:45 a.m. to the Binnall House high-rise apartments on Connors Street. Multiple people on the fifth and sixth floors reported heavy smoke in the hallways.

Firefighters searched the building and found a fire in an apartment on the fourth floor.

Sprinklers in the apartment had activated, which helped keep the flames from spreading. Firefighters entered the apartment and put out the rest of the fire.

The remaining fourth floor apartments were evacuated. Everyone else in the building was told to stay put.

One resident was taken to Heywood Hospital to be checked out for a minor injury.

The fire damage was contained to the single unit. However, the water used to fight the flames caused damage to other apartments on the fourth floor, as well as units below the one that caught fire.

The Red Cross responded to assist the residents who were displaced.

The state fire marshal’s office and the Gardner Fire Department are investigating the cause of the fire.

Gardner's firefighters was assisted by firefighters from Ashburnham, Hubbardston,  Templeton, Westminster and Winchendon.
