Police identify firefighter killed after tree falls on truck in Weare, NH

WEARE, N.H. — A volunteer firefighter was killed when a tree fell on top of a pickup truck Tuesday. Police believe strong wind gusts knocked down the tree.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. in Weare, N.H. near the John Stark Regional High School.

"I had to call the school and told him there was an accident. Stop the kids from coming out because it was pretty bad" one witness said.

Derek Lankowki, a 31-year-old volunteer firefighter with the Lyndeborough Fire Department, was killed in the crash.

Fire Chief Brian Smith told FOX25 that Lankowski, who was from Lyndeborough, was always willing to help.

"He was the type of guy that would do anything for anyone; he would always have stories to tell and got along with everyone he met. Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife, family and friends," Smith said.

Lankowski worked with the fire department for eight years and after his death more than a dozen colleagues gathered at the fire station to mourn.
