WORCESTER (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – Locks to the Worcester Tornadoes' storefront office were expected to be changed by Monday afternoon as a result of a lawsuit filed against the troubled baseball franchise.
A constable delivered paperwork to the Tornadoes Main Street office around 1:30 p.m. on Monday notifying employees that property of the independent baseball team was in the process of being held, pending court proceedings, reports The Worcester Telegram & Gazette.
The Hilton Garden Inn, along with a growing list of creditors, filed suit against the Tornadoes and its owner, Todd Breighner, on Thursday after the team failed to pay for a variety of services, including hotel rooms used by baseball officials, visiting teams, players, as well as other services.
Former Major League Baseball player Jose Canseco, who played for the Tornadoes for three months, also filed suit against the Breighner and his company Streamlined Sports alleging that the checks written out to him bounced, reports the newspaper.
According to the lawsuit, the company's debt includes roughly $60,000 to the city of Worcester for police and fire details, $50,000 to the College of the Holy Cross for utilities, maintenance and use of Hanover Insurance Park, and $5,000 to Worcester Polytechnic Institute for dormitory rooms for players.
