BOSTON — The mad dash is on for drivers without E-ZPass to get signed up as the cash pay toll booths come down.
The state is keeping E-ZPass service centers open longer all weekend to help make it more convenient for drivers who don't have an account.
By 4 p.m. Saturday, MassDOT processed more than 1,700 sign ups. The extended hours will continue through the weekend, but there are some limits on they can do until next week.
As part of the transition to all electronic tolling, MassDOT had to shut down the computer system last night just before 7 p.m. until Tuesday morning so all of the current E-ZPass accounts, about 1.7 million, can be transferred to the new system. On Tuesday morning, drivers will be able to sign up for E-ZPass online.
"The website as it exists today is more informational not transactional. So if you want transactions you would have to go to one of these service centers," said Thomas Tinlin.
Even with electronic tolling you can still drive on the Pike without an E-ZPass - you'll just get a bill with a higher rate in the mail. You can sign up for E-ZPass over the next 6 months and get a refund for the E-ZPass discount difference.
The all new website was activated Friday, and drivers can find information on gantry rates, hours and locations, as well as information about how to get a transponder.
