Vigil held Saturday honoring Cambridge teen shot to death

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — In a huge showing of support, hundreds of people gathered on Pemberton Street in Cambridge Saturday night to remember the life of a 19-year-old who was killed last weekend.

Xavier Louis-Jacques was shot at around 12:30 a.m. last Saturday morning, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s office. Those who knew and loved him congregated for a vigil near the Rindge baseball field and basketball courts where the shooting occurred.

“He was a great, great kid and this was a beautiful send off for him, a very touching tribute,” said Louis-Jacques’ former baseball and football coach, Mike Spartichino.

Those in attendance lit candles, said prayers and hung up signs, creating a memorial for the teen. According to friends, Louis-Jacques was saving money to attend college at Xavier University of Louisiana.

“Hopefully we find justice for Xavier and for his family,” said Brendon Lewis, a longtime friend.

Lewis added that Louis-Jacques was funny, driven and enjoyed collecting shoes. He told Boston 25 News that family believes he was selling shoes the night he was shot.

“When something happens to a kid like that, at 19-years-old and just a nice kid, the first question you ask is why?” said Brian Lewis, Brendon Lewis’ father and another of Louis-Jacques’ former coaches.

The night the shooting occurred, Cambridge Police said they located Louis-Jacques suffering from multiple gunshot wounds near Rindge Field. He was transported to Mount Auburn Hospital where he later died.

As of Saturday, April 3, no arrests had been made and a motive had not been publicly identified.
