United Airlines to offer COVID-19 testing for some domestic passengers

If you have a flight on United Airlines coming up, you may be able to get a coronavirus test, depending on the route.

The company will be offering the test starting on Oct. 15. At first, it will be only available on the route from San Francisco International Airport and Hawaii, USA Today reported.

Passengers will have two options — either take the rapid test offered by Abbot Labs at the airport, getting results in 15 to 20 minutes, or take a mail-in test at home and submit a sample 72 hours before takeoff, according to USA Today.

The cost of the rapid test will be $250, CBS News reported. It is also already available for airport and airline employees.

The at-home kits cost $80 plus shipping, with flyers getting the results within 48 hours, CBS News reported.

Both tests will allow travelers to Hawaii to enter the state without having to quarantine for 14 days, but the at-home test must be taken no earlier than 72 hours before the flight, CNN reported.

If the testing works well, it will be rolled out to other cities.

The International Air Transport Association is calling for testing at all airports for all passengers and crew members before international flights, CNN reported.
