According to the agency, the initial magnitude 6 quake, which occurred shortly before 4 p.m. PDT, was centered about 20 miles southwest of Smith Valley, Nevada, near Walker, California. More than 50 aftershocks – including one with a magnitude of 5.2 – followed, with others expected in the coming days, The Associated Press reported.

Although officials said they have not received any reports of major damage or injuries, the temblor sent large boulders crashing onto U.S. 395, according to the AP. Authorities temporarily closed about 40 miles of the freeway due to rockslides but later reopened that stretch of the road, the news agency reported.

People as far away as Sacramento, San Francisco and Las Vegas felt the quake, officials said.
