The Federal Aviation Administration said that a Piper PA 28 crashed in North Lindenhurst at around 3 p.m., according to WNBC. The plane was close to its destination, which was the Republic Airport in Farmingdale.

The airport is about 40 miles east of downtown New York City, according to The Associated Press.

The FAA said that the plane was believed to have had three people on board when it crashed, according to WABC

Two people were critically injured in the crash and were flown by a police helicopter to the hospital, WNBC reported.

One person died from their injuries, The National Transportation Safety Board said, according to the AP.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer said that the plane crashed by some trees and brush, the news organization reported. Schaffer confirmed that no one on the ground was injured.

“It crashed in a wooded area off of the Long Island Railroad tracks. It’s like a buffer that runs along the tracks,” Schaffer said, according to the AP. Prior to the crash, the plane gave a “mayday call” over the radio.

A local road in the area was closed off by Suffolk County Police, the AP reported.

NTSB on Twitter confirmed that they are investigating the crash. The FAA said they are also doing so.

It is not yet clear if the pilot was one of the persons who died.
