Dad shows up at son's crash site, attacks other driver, police say

A South Florida man is accused of showing up at a two-vehicle crash scene involving his son and assaulting the other driver, slamming his head into the pavement, authorities said.

Pablo Ray Batten, 46, was charged with aggravated battery on a person 65 or older and resisting arrest without violence, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.

The crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday in Pembroke Pines, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

Pembroke Pines police Capt. Adam Feiner said Batten showed up shortly after the Sunday evening crash involving his son, Ray Batten, 18, and Raul Umana, 65, WPLG reported. The two men had contacted police when the elder Batten arrived, the television station reported.

"While police officers were investigating the traffic crash, Pablo Batten arrived without warning, forcibly grabbed Raul Umana by the neck and slammed him to the pavement. This caused Raul Umana to suffer a major head injury," Feiner told the Sun-Sentinel in an email.

Police later determined Ray Batten and his father had been in contact with one another right after the crash, the newspaper reported.

According to an arrest report, a Pembroke Pines police officer was conducting an investigation to determine if Umana was impaired when Pablo Batten grabbed Umana and slammed his head into the pavement, causing a head injury, WSVN reported.

Umana was taken to a local hospital, the Sun-Sentinel reported.
