Sumner Tunnel closed overnight as MassDOT demolishes toll plaza

EAST BOSTON, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has started tearing down the toll plaza at the Sumner Tunnel in East Boston.

MassDOT started demolishing the toll booths late Friday night. The tunnel was closed until 9 a.m. Saturday.

Officials will be back Saturday and Sunday night to finish removing the structure.

Drivers should expect the tunnel to be closed from 9 p.m. Saturday through 9 a.m. Sunday, and then again from 9 p.m. Sunday through 5 a.m. Monday.

Traffic will be detoured through the Ted Williams Tunnel.

The Sumner toll plaza is the final plaza that needs to be removed in the state.
