ONSET, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Beaches in the Onset area are closed after a sewer overflowed Monday.
At about 10:30 a.m., a sewer overflowed on Independence Lane in Onset. Officials are still unsure of the amount of product that was released from the manhole cover, but it did get into the bay through an adjacent storm drain.
The Wareham Board of Health ordered the beaches closed to bathing within all of the Onset Harbor, including Sunset Cove, Agawam Beach, Onset Beach, Shell Point Bay, East River, Broad Cove and Muddy Cove.
The Division of Marine Fisheries closed the following areas to shell fishing.
- Onset Bay
- Sunset Cove
- Shell Point Bay
- Wickets and Onset Island
- Sias Point (southwest facing side)
- Fisherman's Cove
- Cohassett Narrows
- Sias Point (Northeast facing side)
- Butlers Cove/Peter's Neck
All of the beaches will be closed until further notice, officials say. Anyone with questions is asked to call the Wareham Harbormaster Department at 508-291-3100 ext. 3186.
