Rip current dangers at Hampton Beach

HAMPTON BEACH, NH (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Hot, hazy and humid weather may make for ideal beach conditions, but it also makes for dangerous swimming conditions. Lifeguards at Hampton Beach have been rescuing dozens of people caught in rip currents.

The lifeguards have made 24 rescues in 48 hours and a total of 79 rescues this year. In recent days, the problem has been rip currents.

Rip currents happen when the waves push a whole bunch of water onto shore and, as the water builds up, it suddenly rushes back out.  Rip currents are hard see.

Lifeguards recommend riding the stream out like a current while also trying to move out of it sideways.  Typically, a person may panic and try to swim straight back to shore, which is when a swimmer can get into trouble.

Lifeguards at Hampton Beach say the biggest problems have been near the center of the beach,  near lifeguard posts 10 and 11. The lifeguards don't want swimmers to stay out of the water, they just want everyone to be aware and careful.
