BURRILLVILLE, R.I. — Rhode Island police are investigating an online Dropbox containing explicit images and videos of high school girls.
One family says a picture of their daughter she texted to her boyfriend showed up on the site -- among hundreds of others like it from at least 47 other girls in Burrillville, Rhode Island.
Investigators are looking into what court documents are calling, "a wide range of online criminal activity" including "online distribution of child pornography."
"I feel bad for all these young girls. I don't think it's right what these boys have done to them, and they're all upset,” resident Diane Grennell said.
An affidavit doesn't specify who may be responsible for uploading the files online, but it does say that one male student was questioned by school administrators before ultimately sending them the link to the site.
The investigation credits the high school vice principal for bringing this to the attention of law enforcement.
“I think he did a good job with that, but I think a lot of the parents should have been notified, too,” said Grennell.
The school superintendent released a statement saying, "once school officials were made aware of the situation, police were immediately contacted and the investigation is ongoing. Students need to respect themselves and respect others and they need to make smart and good choices."
Families around the town are relieved at least to know that it is now in the hands of police.
“I know that they'll find who did it and then they'll take care of the situation,” Grennell said.
The investigation has been going on since may.
Police said they could not comment on the ongoing investigation but say they view this as a crime of child pornography distribution or child exploitation.
