Reebok announces plans to move headquarters to Boston

BOSTON — Reebok has announced its plans to move its headquarters from Canton to Boston.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said it's another big win for the city.

Reebok is the latest big sneaker company to moving into a new facility in Boston, joining Converse and New Balance. The CEO said the search for a location is on.

There are approximately 950 employees at Reebok's world headquarters in Canton.

Reebok said about 650 of those employees will move to its new location in Boston.

Of the other 300 workers, half will transfer out of state and the other half are expected to lose their jobs.

Boston University Communication Professor Chris Cakebread keeps in step with the sneaker industry and sneaker wars and said many Reebok employees are millennials, and this move is a smart one for the company.

"Allows people to be closer to the brand if you will because you are closer to the city, maybe they'll do more events to try and bring people closer to the brand if you will. There are a lot of CrossFit spaces in Boston already, and maybe they can use those as a launching pad for new products and test products and things like that,” he said

The move is expected to happen by next April.
