BOSTON — It’s been more than a month since Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico and many people who called the island home are making their way to Boston.
Community groups have been opening locations to help those who have lost everything.
One of them is the Villa Victoria on Dedham Street in the South End.
Parents brought kids to the center to get school supplies, housing and healthcare.

The aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico is unimaginable.
People who called the island home have been forced to leave for the sake of their health and children’s education. Schools and hospitals on the island are still closed.
In Boston, Inquilinos Boricuas En Accion, or IBA, is doing all they can to help. Starting Monday, they have pop up locations where people who had to leave everything behind can find housing and schools for their kids.

Everyone in at the pop up location at Villa Victoria’s Technology Room in the south end came from Puerto Rico. They left everything behind. Some have had extremely limited access to medical care, including one woman who made the call to come after her daughter sliced her arm open.
The hope is to find housing for those not staying with family and to get the kids in school by next week.
And communication is still not up to par in Puerto Rico.
