WEST BROOKFIELD, Mass. — Police in West Brookfield are looking for the person or people who killed two baby goats and left them on the back steps of their owner's home.
Police said the less than 4-month-old Norwegian dwarf goats had their necks broken and their bodies were staged with their heads turned the wrong way and their faces pointed toward the home’s door.
Sgt. Matthew Letendre said "there's no question it was intentional" and they were not killed by another animal.
They were found by their owner Monday morning in a place where they could easily have been seen by children.
“It’s very evident that whoever it was is sending a message. Its cruel, it’s very cruel, especially that whoever did it has got to know she has young children there at times. I mean, I can’t even handle it never mind a child handling it,” neighbor Barbara Riberdy said.
Police say they were probably killed sometime after 7 p.m. the previous night because that is the last time anyone recalled hearing the animals.
“I had my window open and there was a horrendous kind of barking, not the kind of barking they do when say the mail people go by,” neighbor Donna Smebakken told Boston 25 News.
Smebakken said she was too tired to stop and investigate the sounds Sunday night, but after hearing about what happened she wishes she had.
“I think we’re all shook up. I’m thinking more of locking my door a little tighter, and that isn’t a good feeling,” she said.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call police at 508-867-1170.
